Shoeless Joe In Exile

Shoeless Joe didn’t think
That Ty Cobb would know him,
In a dry goods store,
Working behind the counter,
So many years after 1919 had happened to him.
Didn’t think he’d want to,
All those summers gone by
Between them.
Cobb had to bait him:
"Don't ya recognize your old pal Ty?"
Joe looked incredulous.
Said,
"I didn’t think anyone from back then
would want to remember me now."
The old exiled ballplayer
So far fallen from grace,
Everything so far away
All the time now,
Everything lost,
Still trying to say
It isn’t so.
